Doors and windows

Sticking doors planed, hinges and handles replaced, and draughts sealed.

Sealant and small repairs

Mouldy silicone redone around baths and sinks, holes filled and loose fittings fixed.

Painting and touch-ups

Single rooms, ceilings, woodwork and scuffed walls painted.

How to find a handyman near you

  1. Describe the job

Write down what needs doing, with photos if you can, so every quote covers the same work.

  2. Get three quotes

Contact at least three local handymen and ask for a written, itemised quote.

  3. Check before you hire

Compare prices, check insurance and registrations, and ask to see recent work.

Before you hire a handyman

A handyman is ideal for small jobs, but not every job is a handyman job.

  • Write a full list of jobs before they visit so they can price it as one.
  • Handymen cannot legally do gas work or notifiable electrical work. Use a Gas Safe engineer or electrician instead.
  • Check whether they bring fixings and materials, or whether you need to buy them.
  • Ask for proof of public liability insurance.

Handyman FAQs

How much does a handyman charge in the UK?

Most handymen charge £30-£50 an hour, or around £100-£180 for a half day and £180-£300 for a full day. Booking a half or full day is usually cheaper for several small jobs.

What jobs can a handyman not do?

Any gas work, and electrical work that is notifiable under building regulations, such as new circuits or work in bathrooms. Bigger plumbing jobs are also better left to a plumber.

Is a handyman cheaper than a tradesperson?

For small jobs, usually yes. Handymen have lower hourly rates and can combine several jobs into one visit. For specialist or regulated work, a qualified tradesperson is the right choice.

Do I need to buy the materials?

It depends. Many handymen bring common fixings, sealant and filler. For items like shelves, blinds or furniture you normally buy them yourself and the handyman fits them.

Can a TV be mounted on plasterboard?

Yes, with the right heavy-duty plasterboard fixings or by fixing into the timber studs. Large or heavy TVs may need extra support, so tell the handyman the size and weight.
